The assistive and rehabilitation devices: orthoses, exoskeletons, wheelchairs, etc., are the mechanical or mechatronic devices designed for the rehabilitation and support of the human locomotive system’s function. When used by the patient a biomechanical or mechatronic complex system of device and human body is formed, which is the research object of the researcher group of Laboratory of Robotics at the National Polytechnic University of Armenia (NPUA).

The research staff of laboratory has been proposed a number of balanced devices for human locomotive system assistants with using of passive elastic elements: walking assistants or human sitting assistants, as well as multi-purpose universal walking and sitting assistive devices. When designing such devices, researchers emphasize on using their own methodological approach to system balancing, based on the principle of parallel and modular design. The new approach provides multifunctionality of the proposed devices at the stage of their conceptual design. By increasing the degrees of mobility and using the same elements to implement different functions, the number of necessary elements is reduced and, as a result, new advantages are obtained, such as portability, mobility, the ability to balance more segments of the human body, while simultaneously balancing the biomechanical system of human and assistive device as a whole. The designed devices can be used both for assisting the locomotive system of a person and for his physiotherapy. At the same time, the devices also provide dosing loads and ranges of angular displacements, therefore, greater efficiency in human physiotherapy. The proposed approach to the design of multi-purpose balanced devices for assisting the locomotive system of a person is quite universal and can be used in the design of not only assistive, but also other portable rehabilitation devices for this purpose.

The Participants of the Innovation Portal carry out the design and preparation of prototype models of assistive and rehabilitation devices offered by the Laboratory of Robotics at NPUA, and organize subsequent experimental research and testing of the proposed devices, promoting finished samples in the target market.
